The size of the auroral belt during magnetic storms

چکیده
Using the auroral boundary index derived from DMSP electron precipitation data and the Dst index, changes in the size of the auroral belt during magnetic storms are studied. It is found that the equatorward boundary of the belt at midnight expands equatorward, reaching its lowest latitude about one hour before Dst peaks. This time lag depends very little on storm intensity. It is also shown that during magnetic storms, the energy of the ring current quanti®ed with Dst increases in proportion to Lÿ3 e , where Le is the Lvalue corresponding to the equatorward boundary of the auroral belt designated by the auroral boundary index. This means that the ring current energy is proportional to the ion energy obtained from the earthward shift of the plasma sheet under the conservation of the ®rst adiabatic invariant. The ring current energy is also proportional to Emag, the total magnetic ®eld energy contained in the spherical shell bounded by Le and Leq, where Leq corresponds to the quiet-time location of the auroral precipitation boundary. The ratio of the ring current energy ER to the dipole energy Emag is typically 10%. The ring current leads to magnetosphere in ̄ation as a result of an increase in the equivalent dipole moment.

Electron flux enhancement in the inner radiation belt during moderate magnetic storms
During moderate magnetic storms, an electron channel (300–1100 keV) of the NOAA satellite has shown sudden electron flux enhancements in the inner radiation belt. After examinating the possibility of contamination by different energetic particles, we conclude that these electron flux enhancements are reliable enough to be considered as natural phenomena, at least for the cases of small to moder...
متن کاملEVOLUTION OF Dst AND AURORAL INDICES DURING SOME SEVERE GEOMAGNETIC STORMS
The evolutions of the geomagnetic Dst and auroral indices AU, AL, AE were examined in relation to interplanetary parameters for thirteen severe storms (Dst change exceeding 250 nT) during 1980-2003. Dst changes occurred every time Bz component of interplanetary magnetic field B turned negative. Among the auroral indices, changes in AU (representing an eastward auroral electrojet) were generally...
متن کاملThe Ring Current, Geomagnetic Disturbance, and the Van Allen Radiation Belts
The large decrease in the horizontal component of the earth's field during the main phase of magnetic storms has been ascribed to the formation or enhancement of a geomagnetic ring current. In this paper we discuss the motions of particles trapped in the earth's dipole field and the resulting ring current. These calculations deal only with a steady state, though during storms the state is chang...
متن کاملSporadic aurorae observed in East Asia
All the accessible auroral observations recorded in Chinese and Japanese histories during the interval AD 1840– 1911 are investigated in detail. Most of these auroral records have never been translated into a Western language before. The East Asian auroral reports provide information on the date and approximate location of each auroral observation, together with limited scientific information o...
متن کاملDynamic pressure enhancements as a cause of large-scale stormtime substorms
[1] Intense substorm disturbances, which typically have an unusually broad auroral enhancement, occur in association with magnetic storms. We have investigated the cause of these intense and broad disturbances using interplanetary observations, global auroral images from the WIC imager on the IMAGE spacecraft, geosynchronous energetic particle observations, and mid/low-latitude dayside ground H...
